A group which described itself as Movement
for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO)
has claimed responsibility for a twin suicide
bomb attack on Thursday morning at the
Nigeria/Niger border in which over 20 Nigerien
soldiers were killed.
It is an Islamic group which claims to be
committed to the enforcement of Shariah law
in West Africa.
A journalist in transit in the area told online
news agency, Sahara Reporters, that the
terrorists also injured about 15 other soldiers,
while four of their own were killed.
The terrorists struck in a military barracks in
Agades, one of the major cities in Niger
Republic, while another group belonging to the
same movement struck at a uranium plant in
Arlit.
According to the journalist, the suicide
bombers arrived in a bomb-laden car
and forced their way into the military facility.
The journalist also said more Nigerian troops
have been deployed to the Niger-Nigeria
border since Wednesday, and that Thursday’s
bombings may also alert the Nigerian
authorities to further strengthen the security
situation.
Another agency report claimed that British
authorities believe that two men accused of
hacking a soldier to death on a London street
in revenge for wars in Muslim countries on
Wednesday were British of Nigerian descent.
Local media in the UK named one of the two
suspects as British-born, 28-year-old
Londoner, Michael Adebolajo, and said police
raided homes of relatives in the city and near
the town of Lincoln.
Both men involved in Wednesday’s attack
appeared to have converted to Islam from
Christian backgrounds, media said.
Adebolajo was born in Lambeth, South London,
in 1985, and then moved to Romford, East
London.
In 2003, he converted to Islam and began
calling himself Mujahid, which means a Muslim
who takes part in jihadist actions, while at
Marshalls Park School.
Adeboloja is said to have joined the banned
Islamist organisation, Al Muhajiroun, which
promotes Sharia law, and other controversial
groups banned under the Terrorism Act.
He is said to have been well known on the
Islamic extremist scene in Britain and may
have been stopped or arrested on his way to
join the militant Islamist group, Al Shabaab, in
Somalia in the past year.
However, the two suspects are not known to
have links to terror groups based in Nigeria,
such as Boko Haram.
Reacting, President Goodluck Jonathan
expressed shock at the London incident.
In a statement by Presidential spokesman,
Reuben Abati, the President conveyed his
sincere condolences to the British Prime
Minister, David Cameron, and the British
people over this “senseless and barbaric act,
and shares their grief at this moment.”
Jonathan noted that a terrorist attack anywhere
was an attack on the way of life of all free
nations and must be collectively condemned by
all persons irrespective of race, ethnicity or
religion.
Meanwhile, back home, Comptroller-General of
the Nigeria Prisons Service, Zakari Ibrahim,
disclosed on Thursday that the terrorist attacks
directed at the nation’s prisons had claimed
the lives of 45 officers to date.
He noted that the sophistication of the attacks
was partly responsible for inability of his men
to repel the terrorists.
“They come well armed, in 10-20 vehicles and
with rocket-propelled munitions, shooting
widely at anything in sight; often we are
engaged in low scale war with them,” Ibrahim
said at a forum in Abuja.
He stressed that the service would need more
arms and additional personnel to be able ward
off future attacks.
The Prisons boss noted, however, that ongoing
collaboration between the service and other
security agencies, including the police and the
army, has brought some succor.
He said additional measures, including the
construction of perimeter fences around some
prisons have been initiated to help reduce the
spate of attack.
While noting that compensations have been
paid out to dependents of the deceased
officers, Ibrahim refused to disclose how much
was paid to their families, insisting that no
amount of money can compensate for human
life.
Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) also on
Thursday accused President Goodluck Jonathan
of deceit by his recent declaration of state of
emergency in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states
where he said all the democratic structures
would be kept intact.
It alleged that the President has indeed
“grabbed power in the states and castrated
democracy there.”
The party spoke through a statement on
Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary,
Lai Mohammed.
ACN claimed that contrary to Jonathan’s
assurance that “the Governors and other
political office holders in the affected states
will continue to discharge their constitutional
responsibilities,” the gazette published by the
Federal Government on the declaration
“showed that the President has virtually
eviscerated the democratic structure and
stripped the political office holders of their
constitutional responsibilities.”
ACN also warned that “unless this despotic
tendency is checked, nothing prevents the
President, in the name of the ongoing fight
against Boko Haram, from extending this
power to grab other states that catch his fancy.
‘’This is dangerous and must be checked, in the
interest of our democracy,’’ the party said.
Another report said late Thursday that Nigeria
has entered into partnership with the United
States and Chinese firms to provide modern
techniques to man the nation’s borders to
check influx of illegal immigrants from
neighouring countries.
Interior Minister, Abba Moro, who gave this
hint, further disclosed that 1,497 illegal entry
points were discovered to be in existence apart
from the 84 legal border posts.
The Sino-Nigerian-American partnership
nonetheless, does not seem to be a tripartite
agreement among the three nations, as the
minister described it as a synergy aimed at
stemming terrorism.
The minister spoke in Abuja during a chat with
newsmen moments after briefing the National
Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) on the performance of
his ministry since assumption of duties.

Yenagoa, Bayelsa State has been thrown into darkness
following massive damage caused to the high-
tension transmission line of Power Holding
Company of Nigeria (PHCN), which supplies
electricity to the state.
Daily Independent gathered that a heavy storm
last weekend pulled down a big tree which fell
on one of the electrical masts in the thick
forest of riverine Obunagha community in
Yenagoa local government area of the state.
The tree was said to have badly damaged the
mast, causing a comprehensive disruption of
electricity supply to Bayelsa.
Already, water vendors and operators of
salons, documentation centres and cold rooms
in Yenagoa capitalised on the situation to
arbitrarily increase prices of their services,
even as long queues are observed at petrol
stations.
Investigation showed that a 20-litre jerry can
of water now goes for N50 as against N30,
while a haircut had increased from N200 to
N300.
Residents of the state capital have been
lamenting the power outage as they spend a
lot of money on petrol to power their
generators.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Energy, Olis
Kemenanabo, estimated on Monday that it may
take not less than three weeks for power to be
restored and regretted the hardship and
inconvenience the situation had caused
residents.
Kemenanabo assured that the state government
would deploy effort towards solving the problem.
Reacting to the development, Business Manager of PHCN, Yenagoa District, Godwin
Orovwhiroro, said the company would construct a by-pass around the area of damage to restore electricity by the weekend.

Four persons have been confirmed dead at the Spintex Road branch of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) founded by Prophet T.B. Joshua.

The tragic incident occurred after a stampede ensued at the church Sunday during the distribution of free holy water. The man of God, Prophet TB Joshua had earlier given the announcement on their station, Emmanuel TV, that there was going to be a distribution of anointed water at the service. The holy water, to many TB Joshua followers is acclaimed to be the panacea to the many spiritual afflictions.

Hundreds were said to have started arriving at the church premises from 8pm last night and before the service could start this morning, the stampede occurred because of the overflow. The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the 37 and Police Hospital mortuaries. Earlier in the morning, a flotilla of cars on the Spintex road and its enclave, en route for an anointing water service by Nigeria’s Prophet T. B. Joshua in Accra, resulted in another impenetrable gridlock which caused frustration to commuters and Residents in that area.

Hundreds of cars belonging to Nigerians in Ghana as well as Ghanaians, were parked on the sides of the road in a mesh of chaos, which spewed onto the roads, thus resulting in a go slow.
